Harassment Training Requirements

South Africa’s Code of Good Practice on the Prevention and Elimination of Harassment and Violence in the Workplace does not specify a required frequency for training, but mandates that training must be ongoing and inclusive.

Employers should conduct training as part of a continuous effort to foster a respectful culture, ensure all employees, contractors, and even third-party providers are covered, and provide regular education on how to recognize, prevent, and respond to harassment.

Key requirements for training

Ongoing: Training should not be a one-off event but an ongoing process. This can be reinforced through awareness campaigns and “toolbox talks”.

Inclusive: All individuals in the workplace environment should be trained. This includes employees, managers, volunteers, persons in training, contractors, and third-party service providers who have dealings with the business.

Comprehensive: The training should cover how to recognize, prevent, and respond to harassment, and must include education on how to handle complaints.

Proactive: Employers should proactively assess the risk of harassment and implement training as a key part of their preventative strategy
